![]() Doug Smith Junior Varsity Head Coach |
Coach Smith (born September 17, 1969, in Detroit, Michigan)
was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 1991 NBA
draft. Smith was a four-year starter at the University of Missouri where
he saw his numbers, across the board, rise each season from 11.3 points
per game as a freshman to 23.6 ppg his senior year. He joined Danny
Manning and Wayman Tisdale as only the third player in Big Eight history
to score more than 2000 points and grab 1000 rebounds in a career. Smith
finished second all-time in scoring for the University of Missouri and was
the Big Eight’s Player-of-the-Year in 1990 and 1991. The conference named
him their male Athlete-of-the-Year in 1991 and he was a two-time
post-season tournament MVP. With those credentials, the Dallas Mavericks took Smith in the first round (sixth overall) of the 1991 NBA draft. He played for the Mavs for four seasons, appearing in 279 games, and posting his best numbers in his second year averaging 10.4 ppg and 5.4 RPG. He finished his NBA career with the Boston Celtics, appearing in 17 games during the 1995-1996 season. Doug Smith also played for the US national team in the 1990 FIBA World Championship, winning the bronze medal. Smith’s alma mater honored him by electing him to the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996 and retiring his number 34 - only the fifth player in Missouri history to earn that honor. Coach Grothaus says “Coach Smith’s basketball resume as a player is better than anyone in the state of Arizona. He is a great asset to our program and will have great influence over all three levels.” |

This is Coach McCabe's first year being a
member of Coach Grothaus staff and he couldn't be more excited to be here.
Coach McCabe has known Coach Grothaus for nearly 20 years. Coach McCabe
and Coach Grothaus grew up playing for all of the same coaches and feel
