BASHA BEARS COACHING STAFF 2014-15

Mike Grothaus
Varsity Head Coach

Coach Grothaus enters his second season as the head basketball coach of the Basha Bears. Prior to coming to Basha Coach Grothaus was the top assistant coach for Sam Ballard and the Thunderbirds of Mesa Community College. In his 5 years there he was responsible for recruiting, scouting, game preparation, practice planning and strength and conditioning. During the 2009-10 season the Thunderbirds held an overall record of 25-7 and 19-3 in the ACCAC. They were crowned Region I champs and would eventually fall to College of Eastern Utah in the District I Championship.

As a player coach Grothaus played 3 years at Grand Canyon University and 1 year at Jamestown College. His senior year they were Pacific West Champions and made it to the second round of the Nation Tournament. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Master’s degree in Secondary Education.

In high school Coach Grothaus played for legendary coach Tom Bennett. In 2003 his team went 31-3 and won the state championship defeating Desert Vista 56-51. Coach Grothaus was married April 12, 2013 to Vanessa Grothaus.

Doug Smith
Junior Varsity Head Coach
Coach Smith (born September 17, 1969, in Detroit, Michigan) was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 1991 NBA draft. Smith was a four-year starter at the University of Missouri where he saw his numbers, across the board, rise each season from 11.3 points per game as a freshman to 23.6 ppg his senior year. He joined Danny Manning and Wayman Tisdale as only the third player in Big Eight history to score more than 2000 points and grab 1000 rebounds in a career. Smith finished second all-time in scoring for the University of Missouri and was the Big Eight’s Player-of-the-Year in 1990 and 1991. The conference named him their male Athlete-of-the-Year in 1991 and he was a two-time post-season tournament MVP.

With those credentials, the Dallas Mavericks took Smith in the first round (sixth overall) of the 1991 NBA draft. He played for the Mavs for four seasons, appearing in 279 games, and posting his best numbers in his second year averaging 10.4 ppg and 5.4 RPG. He finished his NBA career with the Boston Celtics, appearing in 17 games during the 1995-1996 season. Doug Smith also played for the US national team in the 1990 FIBA World Championship, winning the bronze medal.

Smith’s alma mater honored him by electing him to the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996 and retiring his number 34 - only the fifth player in Missouri history to earn that honor. Coach Grothaus says “Coach Smith’s basketball resume as a player is better than anyone in the state of Arizona. He is a great asset to our program and will have great influence over all three levels.”

Marques Reischl
Freshman Head Coach
Coach Grothaus says “When Coach Reischl came back to Basha to coach football, numerous administrators and coaches told me I needed to have him on my staff. They were right, Coach Reischl is an excellent teacher and an even better person, I am extremely excited to watch him coach our Freshmen group.”

Coach Reischl is originally from Tombstone, AZ where he attended Tombstone High School. He then attended Western New Mexico University and played football, basketball and tennis at the university.

After his college career was completed he played two years of Arena Football. He then coached football at Western New Mexico University for 6 years. Coach Reischl has been at Basha High School since 2010. He has coached Football, Basketball and Baseball at the school.

Coach Reischl’s wife Meredith coaches softball and volleyball at Basha and they have two daughters Marlei and Magnahni.

James McCabe
Varsity Assistant

This is Coach McCabe's first year being a member of Coach Grothaus staff and he couldn't be more excited to be here. Coach McCabe has known Coach Grothaus for nearly 20 years. Coach McCabe and Coach Grothaus grew up playing for all of the same coaches and feel they have a mutual vision for the principles and system they teach.

Coach McCabe has previously spent time as a Skills Coach, helping young players develop their technique and knowledge of the game.

Coach McCabe currently works for an Investment company and is grateful his schedule allows him to be a part of this program. Coach McCabe recently celebrated his 4th wedding anniversary with his wife Alexis and they are both very excited to be a part of Basha Nation.
