Basha whacks Highland in season finale
February 11, 2020 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Tuesday night's Highland-Basha boys basketball clash was yet another example of how tightly bunched and competitive the 6A playing field is when play-in games start Friday and the state tourney debuts Feb. 18.

No. 10 Basha put on a performance coach Mike Grothaus would like to bottle, turning in a complete outing in a 58-41 win over No. 2 Highland in the 6A regular season finale for the schools at Basha.

"We played hard, defended well and I'm really proud of our effort," Grothaus said. "This is a situation where anybody can beat anybody. We've had the flu bug affecting us some lately. Still have guys getting over it. So it was nice to get the effort we got."

The final regular-season power rankings will be released Wednesday by noon with the top eight teams earning byes to state while teams 9-16 pair up for play-in games on Friday.

Basha (13-13 overall, 10-8 power-ranking games) gradually improved its lead through the first three quarters. The Bears held a 10-8 lead after one quarter and 25-15 edge at halftime. If Highland (17-8, 13-5 prg) had plans for a run in the third period it didn't materialize. Junior guard Trent McLaughlin, one of the Bears slowed by the flu recently, totaled eight points at halftime. He doubled that plus one in the third period drilling three, three-point shots.

Sophomore post Brady Reynolds added six points in the quarter (finishing with nine) and along with freshman Landon Schumaker controlled the boards for the Bears. Junior guard Thomas Hastings also stepped up with a 17-point effort, 10 in the first half. He added a three to go with the trio made by McLaughlin in the third period that saw Basha's lead balloon to 47-25 with a quarter to go.

"This was a great team win," Grothaus said. "We've had some younger guys get in in there and they're gaining some confidence.  (Freshman Ty) Sandoval drew another charge. He's broken our freshman record with more than 20 this year. Highland can be dangerous in several ways. We did a good job denying penetration, and they weren't able to hurt us with threes."

Highland made two threes in the first half and three in the second half. The last three came with Basha up 20 points and the game in hand.  The 41 points were the lowest total in a loss this season for the Hawks, who won a game with a season-low 37 in December.

Trenton McLaughlin hit a buzzer beater to help the Bears top Perry by  a score of 51-48. The shot was featured on SportsCenter as part of their tribute to those inspired by Kobe Bryant.

Basha Freshman Schumaker Impressing
Eric Sorenson-Posted February 1, 2020 at 9:25 am
It wasn’t one of Landon Schumaker’s best Basha games. A handful of turnovers, mixed with some missed shots and pointed in-game “coaching” from Mike Grothaus.

But when it mattered, the 6-foot-6 freshman made it count.

Schumaker calmly sank two free throws in the final minute which proved to be the difference in a recent last-second thriller over Mesa High.

For those close to the Bears’ program it was another example of the ultra-skilled Schumaker developing his game on-the-fly at the highest level of Arizona high school basketball.

“I had heard about him,” head coach Grothaus said to Sports360AZ.com recalling his first memories of Schumaker. “To see him play and to watch him grow in this short amount of time, it’s been special.”

While the learning curve has, at times, been steep – Schumaker leads Basha in rebounding and is second in scoring.

“There have been games when I’ve tried to [catch up] to the speed of it,” Schumaker explained with a shrug. “But overall I think I’m doing pretty well.”

Schumaker, who comes from a close family in the southeast Valley, has been playing the game he loves longer than he can remember…with a little help from older brother, Zach.

“Ever since I was like two, on those Fisher-Price hoops,” he said harkening back. “[Zach] put a ball in my hand ever since I was little, crawling around. He’s been with me every step of the way through my basketball career.”

“He’s got great size, great hands, great feet,” Grothaus said. “He comes in every single day with a positive attitude. He wants to be great.”

Sounds a lot like that James’ guy he’s been texting with.

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE - ROUND 2 - NOVEMBER 26, 2019
BASHA 63, WILLIAMS FIELD 37:

The Bears (1-1) used a a torrid second-half in all phases to top the Black Hawks (0-2). Freshman Landon Schumaker led Basha and all scorers with 20 points. Schumaker was a presence in all phases.

Senior guard CJ Noder added 18 points and helped Basha begin its second-half getaway sinking three consecutive threes and tallying 11 of his points in the period. It allowed Basha to stretch a 25-21 halftime lead to 44-26 heading to the final period. Montez Taylor led Williams Field with 15 points.
